At the Victorian State Championships at the Centre for Performing Arts in Ballarat on 23 August 2008, the band won the Open B Grade Concert Band Championship. The band came first (90/100) for the Own Choice test piece ("Music for a Festival") and for the two Entertainment pieces ("Lawrence of Arabia" and "That's Entertainment") and won the overall combined event by 5 clear points. The adjudicator was very complimentary about much of the playing and said that the band had clearly A grade capabilities. Special congratulations to the team who made up the band for Ballarat. Apparently an SA band has not won in Victoria for some years so that added to the achievement.
As you can imagine there was a happy crew on Saturday night and even though there were a few in need of serious rest on the trip home on Sunday the atmosphere on the bus back was very upbeat. Thanks again to our MD, Dr. Kevin Cameron for the choice of music and for leading and preparing the band.
